A Hero in Hiding.

In my book Immortal Beauty, the main character struggles with the idea that she has lived many other lives before this one. There is a moment in the book where the past and the present collide and she questions who she truly is. If I had been here before, how much of that other personality still exists within me today? I have a terrible fear of anything too tight around my neck. If a necklace or a shirt or a tie is too tight I panic and end up ripping it off my body and tossing the offending article as far away from me as possible. Is this because my neck was chopped off in a former life, or was I a slave wearing a tight collar? I start to question the things that have no answers. I personally do not like the idea of coming back around and around again like recycled plastic. I like the philosophy that arises out of the reincarnation belief. We don’t have to get it right the first time, that would be too much pressure. We can come back and fix things or if we were terrible in one life we could be kind and selfless in the next. This dogma allows a sense of justice that if someone was a monster in this life, he would come back and get his karma kicked! Like all theories and dogma, it explains many of the chaotic and inexplicable events that occur in this crazy mortal life. I was taught that my reward would come in heaven and if I didn’t get it all in this life, I would get it in the afterlife if I was a good boy. I like the idea that there is only one me, wich is probably just my ego yawning and stretching before it unleashes the claws, but I am not sure I like that I am not just me. I am the sum total of all the lives I had lived before. I am just another version of me, trying to make meaning out of the madness. Sasha rejects her pasts and is angry that she just can’t be herself because in this life she has it pretty good. She doesn’t want to be a samurai assasin from long ago, or a pampered member of the upper class right before the French revolution. She doesn’t want the memories of life after life invading her lovely Parisian existence. She just wanted to be the young American girl that made her way in this world by herself. She rejects her pasts which creates conflict within herself and with others around her. It is not until she fully accepts who she is and who she was that I believe she becomes really interesting and absolutely admirable.

The idea for Immortal Beauty came from my own inability to accept my past in this life, if not in my other lifetimes. I had a lot of things happen in my life that I would not accept and until I accepted them and even thanked them, was I able to move on with my life. The book was my own attempt to find peace within myself from acceptance of the most difficult thing in the world to accept: The Self. I am what I am. It’s not just  a song! Until I was willing to accept all that I had been, the good, the bad, and the ugly, I was not able to move on and found myself stuck in behavioral cycles that I was not thrilled with yet unable to change. Once I realized I was a mere mortal and not the super demi-god that my ego would have me believe, I was able to accept my mistakes and my darkness before I could truly move into my own light. I am still on the fence when it comes to reincarnation but I love the idea that we have the time and the space to make our mistakes and learn from them and carry on and start all over again: tabula rasa. We are washed clean. Now my horrid past seems amusing at times when I look back and realize I truly am not the person I was, and that I had a big part in this new creation of the self. I believe we are formed and shaped by our environment and our genes and that these are the first programs downloaded into our psyches before we develop natural firewalls. I used to fight like my parents fought until I learned a different way to argue. Now I spend much of my time deleting programs that no longer serve a healthy function in my life. I believe my life has been a classroom and I am learning something new everyday. This biggest thing I learned on this recent journey to accept my past that the hardest thing and the most important thing was to accept and forgive myself. I am, thankfully and gratefully only human! I don’t know if I have what it takes to be an Immortal! Only time will tell!

Sarac, a young student magician is beaten and cast aside when Alena, a priestess he loves is captured and carried off to sea by marauders who torch his village in search of the Crystal of Fire.
Sarac resolves to rescue Alena, though doesn’t realize that his urgent quest is part of a greater purpose; the Crystal of Fire is one of four Crystals of Power ancient Wizards created to prevent the terrible planetary upheaval their world suffers every one thousand years. Sarac must find the Crystals of Power and unite them before the Fall Equinox when the red planet Nibiru comes into alignment with their planet or all will be lost.
Naga, an evil sorcerer, seeks the Crystals of Power as well for a different purpose, to enslave all mankind and gain dominion over their world regardless of the devastation it will cause.
With the help of Joran, a wizard of immense power, Sarac faces increasing threats from the approaching cataclysm which is starting to rain destruction on their planet, and from Naga who is determined to retrieve the Crystals of Power at all costs. The urgency of their quest increases when Sarac learns that Naga is torturing Alena to get her to reveal the location of the remaining Crystals of Power. As the Fall Equinox approaches, Sarac struggles to unravel an ancient prophecy, defeat Naga, rescue Alena, and ultimately save their world from violent destruction.

Did you ever have one of those days where it seems a better idea to pull the covers up a little closer than to cast them off and jump out of bed, ready to face another day? You know those moments when you just don’t want to put on the ‘face’ and face another day of people and protocol and civilized manners all abounding. There are times in life when it all just seems like it is too much trouble to go through the motions. It is easy to do as the carousel of life continues to spin around and around whether we are on it or not. We can jump back on tomorrow, or even a little later maybe. Depression and Melancholy are two hungry sisters who come to visit the writer when he is alone in the studio at night. There have been times in my life when it seemed that it would be easier to just give up. Why was I expending all this energy and effort into something that seemed indifferent to all my attentions? I realized that life does go on, with or without me and its vast indifference to my immense ego can be so unsettling at times I think to myself: “Why bother?”. These are passing moments and I’m sure we’ve all been there, but sooner or later we realize the coffee won’t brew itself and the dishes won’t wash themselves and that the ‘Big Parade’ truly is passing beneath our window and we feel the pull to return to the tide of events we call our life. We deal with our malaise and rouse ourselves up and find that we are swept along with everyone else on this mortal coil. The Immortals in my book have been alive for a very long time and I wonder if I had the same “luxury” as they did would my bouts of indifference become decades of melancholy? If I knew I was going to live forever I am sure I could convince myself that it really didn’t matter if I stayed in bed during the 70’s. It would, in the end, be no big deal. I had an eternity to make up for it. Time was on my side! I believe it is the fact that our lives are indeed temporary that we find the necessary impetus to get back in the ring before the bout is over. There is absolutely a preciousness that is a direct result of the ephemeral nature of being. I am only here for a minute. What am I going to do in that minute? How can I make a difference in the short amount of time I am here on earth? I have spent so much of my life trying to figure out who I was and now I have even less time to turn all that attention outward and see what is before my very eyes.  There is a quote from an Amy Grant song about her purpose in life and she sings: “I only have to do what I can find.”. I love this sentiment. I only have to do what is right in front of me in my life. This leads the way outward. If my friend is in need or I find a stray dog walking down my street, these are things I can do to make a difference and somehow leave the world a little bit nicer than how I found it. My entire life has been a movie starring me and I blame most of this on youth and quite a bit on my enormous ego which I have been chipping away at for years! Now that I am looking outward I see a world full of need. There are so many horrible things happening right now that I could easily pull those covers up tighter and tighter until I no longer see the suffereing and retreat into my sadness, using it as a reason to stay in bed, or I could see these things as a way to become truly Immortal by helping a hurt go away, or finding a home for that stray. I could clean up my sick friend’s house or volunteer at the hospital. I could leave a mark that has nothing to do with being famous or fabulous or wealthy. If I think this through, if I help to heal one hurt today or ease one pain, in a thousand years the entire world will be a different world than if I did not do these things. One small act of kindness lives on forever, changing the chain of events that were in play until you made a difference. On this day, the man in pain was touched by what you did and he tried to do the same for his family and they tried to do the same to their friends and on and on. On this day the world turned right instead of left and it became a better world. If you’ve lived long enough my Beloved Immortals you know that every event is connected and affects the entire web of life. Through our actions we become Immortal and in this way our very spirit lives on in this amazing and terrifying planet we call home. Stay Beautiful My Beloved Immortals! We live on and on!
